What is Solarpunk?

Solarpunk is more than a subgenre of science fiction. It's a mindset of envisioning and creating a beautiful planet powered by sustainable energy, conscientious technologies, and human societies that are cooperative and peaceful.

Visionaries see everything from an open economy (think "open floorplan" for money) to solar panels and community gardens instead of fertilized lawns in suburbia.

Here is a link to an article on SolarPunk, titled, "Sci-Fi doesn't have to be depressing."

How do you envision your beautiful planet?

Science fiction is a self-fulfilling prophecy. Just ask Gene Roddenberry or Jules Verne!

Why a Writing Contest?

If we're going to envision a positive future, it's not the work of just a few people. It's a collective effort.

Is Science Fiction a self-fulfilling prophecy?
Do we create the world we imagine?
Have now-famous writers of the past influenced their future, our present?

"We are what we think.
All that we are arises with our thoughts.
With our thoughts we make the world."

Solarpunk is "Positive Futurism", not Utopianism
We are imagining a practical, better world, not an idyllic one. How does the better world we know is possible evolve from the world we have? How does society's collective mindset shift to a world where the acquisition of wealth is no longer our driving force, and where we seek to better ourselves and all of humanity? How do we get there from here?

Futurism is the term for a literary and artistic movement in Italy from the early 20th century. Futurism explored, among other ideas, the concept that everything is interconnected, and called for a reawakening of our "divine intuition" to be able to recognize that. Futurist writing used analogies to show that everything relates to everything else, and that this is the true reality underlying the physical world. Despite the limitations of what our five physical senses allow us to perceive, everything is in fact interconnected.

Positive Futurism asks us to believe in, and actively imagine, a world that has transcended today's most seemingly insurmountable challenges and to believe that we can "Make it so," in the words of Star Trek's Captain Picard.

Good luck with your writing!

We look forward to reading about the worlds you create! And living in the one we create together....
